"बिली जोएल", अत्यंत संवेदनशील गीतकार, संगीतकार गायक आणि जबरदस्त पियानीस्ट. हजारो त्याच्या पियानो वादनावर फिदा आहेत नि मला खात्री आहे तुमचंही यावर दुमत नसावं. बिलीची कारकीर्द जवळपास अर्ध्या दशकभराची. त्याने स्वत: एकट्याने लिहिलेली त्याची ३३ गाणी चार्टसमध्ये वरच्या पाय-यांवर स्थापित आहेत. (पहिल्या ४० मध्ये.) त्याला २३ ग्रॅमी नामांकनं आहेत तर त्यापैकी ६ वेळा तो ग्रॅमी जिंकला आहे. त्याची जगभरातली रेकॉर्ड्स-विक्री १५ कोटींच्या वर झालेली आहे. साँग-रायटर्स हॉल ऑफ फेम, रॉक एण्ड रोल हॉल ऑफ फेम इत्यादींमध्ये सामील केला गेलेला बिली, बिल-बोर्ड मासिकाच्या जगातील सर्वोच्च कलाकारांच्या मांदियाळीत २३व्या क्रमांकावर आहे.
त्याचे स्वत:चे मत तो त्याच्या गाण्यांत नियमितपणे व्यक्त करतो. त्याचे आनंदाचे, दु:खाचे अनुभव तो गाण्यात गुंफतो. त्याचं पाहिलं प्रसिद्ध गाणं होतं, १९७३ सालचं Piano Man. एका गीत-संगीतकाराच्या दृष्टीने आजूबाजूचे जग या गाण्यात फार सुंदर प्रकारे दर्शवले आहे. पण महत्त्वाची गोष्ट ही आहे की गाण्यात वर्णलेला हा गीत-संगीतकार दुसरा तिसरा कुणी नसून बिली जोएल स्वत:च होता.
झालं काय होतं, एक कलाकार आपल्या कारकिर्दीत व्यावसायिक म्हणून ज्या चुका करतो त्या चुका बिलीनेही केल्या. फार कमी कलाकारांना स्वत:चा बिझनेस स्वत:च सांभाळता येतो. बिली त्यात कमी पडला. न्यूयॉर्कहून तो लॉस एंजलीसला 'फॅमिली
प्रॉडक्शन' नावाच्या रेकॉर्ड लेबल बरोबर कॉन्ट्रॅक्ट साईन करून आला. त्याचा या कंपनीबरोबरचा पहिला अल्बम, कंपनीच्या चुकीमुळे, बाजारात पार धुतला गेला. बिलीला 'कोलंबिया रेकॉर्ड्स' या दुस-या कंपनीशी नवा करार करायचा होता पण आधीच्या करारातील जाचक अटींमुळे सर्व अडचणीचं झालेलं. मग बिली काही दिवस 'बिली मार्टिन' या नावाने गुपचूप एल.ए. मधल्या एका बारमध्ये लाउंज पियानिस्ट म्हणून काम करू लागला आणि दरम्यान 'कोलंबिया रेकॉर्ड्स'चे वकील त्याला आधीच्या करारातून सोडवण्याच्या कामाला लागले.
या बारमध्ये काम करताना आपल्या अवतीभवती पाहिलेल्या लोकांवरून आणि स्वत:च्या त्या वेळच्या अगतिक परीस्थितीमधल्या अनुभवावरून बिलीने गाणं लिहिलं, 'Piano Man'. स्वत:सकट अनेकांमध्ये त्याला फलद्रूप न झालेल्या आकांक्षा त्या काळात दिसल्या. त्यावेळचे त्याच्या आजूबाजूचे बार-टेंडर्स, वेट्रेसेस, बारमध्ये येणारी मंडळी यांचे आणि बिलीचे स्वत:चे अनुभव-इच्छा एकत्र गुंफून त्याने हे अप्रतिम गाणं दिलं आहे.
संगीतामध्ये मुख्यत: पियानोचा अप्रतिम वापर हे या गाण्याचा विशेष आहे. सुरुवात जॅझ प्रकारच्या पियानो वादनाने होऊन पुढे बिलीने आपल्या सुरेख पियानो आणि हार्मोनिका वादनाने आणि गाण्याच्या मस्त मेलडीने चार चांद लावले आहेत.
